Donald J. Schneider, the former president, CEO and chairman of Schneider National, died Friday after a long battle with Alzheimer’s disease. He was 76 years old.
For 26 years, Schneider steered the company his father founded through deregulation and built it into one of the largest truckload carriers in the U.S. His investments in technology and diversification of the company from its asset-based trucking roots had a profound impact on trucking and transportation in the U.S.

Alexandria, Virginia – The Truckload Carriers Association (TCA) and Randall-Reilly Business Media & Information Company (Randall-Reilly) are pleased to announce the names of the top three company driver and owner operator contenders in the 2011 Driver of the Year competition. Competing in the Owner Operator contest will be Kirby Killgore of O & S Trucking, Inc., Springfield, Mo.; Larry Severson of Dart Transit Company, Eagan, Minn.; and Bryan Smith of Art Pape Transfer, Inc., Dubuque, Iowa. For the Company Driver contest, the contenders will be James Coles of MacKinnon Transport, Inc., Guelph, Ontario; John Moeller of Roehl Transport, Inc., Marshfield, Wisc.; and Ronald Round of Pottle’s Transportation, Inc., Bangor, Maine.
The grand prizewinners for each contest will be announced at TCA’s Annual Convention, to be held March 4-7, 2012, at the Gaylord Palms in Kissimmee, Fla.
“We are excited about partnering with TCA on this important program and are pleased to be able to honor these exemplary truckers in the pages of Overdrive and Truckers News,” says Jeff Mason, Randall-Reilly senior vice president, trucking. “And thanks to the generosity of our sponsors—Cummins and Dodge—each winner will receive a Cummins-powered Dodge pickup truck.”
The overall goal of the Driver of the Year competition is to recognize and pay tribute to the outstanding company and owner operator truck drivers who provide reliable and safe truck transportation in moving the nation's goods. The top three in each category are selected based on their ability to operate in a safe manner on the public highways, efforts to enhance the public image of the trucking industry, and positive contributions to the communities in which they live.
To be eligible for the contests, driver applicants had to meet certain minimum criteria, such as having driven one million consecutive, accident-free miles. Trucking companies were limited to nominating only five drivers for each contest. Previous grand prizewinners were not eligible to enter either contest again.
The contest judges examined each applicant’s operating information, work history, and safety record. They also evaluated each applicant’s 300-word essays explaining why he/she is a good “trucking citizen” and should be a candidate for the grand prize. For the owner operators, the judges reviewed equipment specifications, business plans, and financial statements as well.
TCA Chairman Gary Salisbury, president and CEO of Fikes Truck Line, Inc., of Hope, Ark., said, “From my own experience as a driver, I can testify to how much work each of these dedicated individuals went through to get to this moment in their careers. I will be honored to shake each of their hands in Kissimmee!”
As the 2011 program moves toward its conclusion, the 2012 competition is already underway. Two months ago, TCA and Randall-Reilly named the top eight company drivers and top 11 owner operators in the 2012 contests. The next step will be profiles of each finalist appearing in issues of Truckers News (for the company driver contest) and Overdrive (for the owner operator contest) next year. The top three in both categories will be named before the end of 2012 and the grand prizewinners will be recognized at TCA’s 2013 Annual Convention in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Increase in revenue and client base lead to expanded service lines
January 11, 2012 (Lufkin, Texas) – Lee TranServices continues to lead the motor carrier industry in its ability to provide comprehensive and substantial compliance and risk management support for trucking companies. In 2011 the company experienced unprecedented growth throughout its business; including revenue, client base and service lines.
“When downturns happen in the economy, people often look to reduce their internal staff and choose to outsource their back-office needs,” said Gene Lee, founder and CEO of Lee TranServices. “Companies that look to Lee Trans for this support find that when they hire us, they’re getting an entire staff of high-quality and dedicated people excited to work with them.”
The company’s earnings grew 113 percent from 2010 and its client base grew by 32 percent, not including the substantial number of existing clients that added new service lines. Lee TranServices’ employee base also grew by 21 percent, with an additional 30 percent growth predicted for 2012. With 2011’s success, Lee TranServices introduced the brand new UQ Service Offering, the company’s SaaS Model Driver Qualification System; the CSA Solution CSAdvantage; and rolled out the latest version of their Driver Log Auditing System (DLA 2.0). Additionally, Lee TranServices plans to release its newest Driver Qualification File System (DQ 3.0) early in 2012. The company also continues to integrate with even more GPS and fuel card companies in both their Fuel Tax and Driver Log systems.
Lee says that Lee TranServices’ clients quickly realize that while outsourcing their back-office support may save them some costs to maintaining an internal staff, they instantly gain a higher level of expertise and support with a company that specializes in the needs of their specific industry. Lee TranServices is especially known for its industry leading compliance package and its constant ability to provide exclusive advanced technology to its clients.
“Lee Trans has a reputation for being very hands-on in assisting and servicing clients in the day to day as well as in audit situations, which is one of the many reasons that our company is second-to-none in the transportation industry,” said David Radke, Lee TranServices Senior Vice President of Administration and General Counsel. “Our strategic partnerships with industry leaders in GPS technologies, fuel card services, CSAdvantage and other key organizations, as well as our superior software and web based systems, also set us apart.”
“The company’s specialized knowledge, years of experience and dedicated effort, matched with the latest in technology, are why Lee TranServices is the top choice for fleets considering compliance and risk management services,” said Radke. Longwood, Fla. — With diesel fuel costs currently hovering at an average of approximately $3.90 per gallon, diesel fuel users such as professional truck drivers understand the economics of operating their vehicles as efficiently as possible, and maintaining them to extend their working life. For the diesel-savvy minded, Truckers Best oil treatment from Bell Performance has been a trusted name since 1983 in engine performance optimization.
Truckers Best contains Bell Performance’s unique MBL (metal-based lubricant) additive package which gives truckers and heavy duty diesel operators truly superior protection for one of their most valuable assets: their engine. Very simply, Truckers Best increases diesel engine performance and, in the process, reduces total diesel fuel costs.
“Using Truckers Best on a regular basis can provide significant savings in annual diesel fuel cost budgets for those who drive between 50,000 and 100,000 miles annually,” says Glenn Williams, president of Bell Performance. “For a professional truck driver, that tremendous level of savings can provide the economic edge needed to compete more effectively.”
Over time, engines and motors inevitably develop tiny scores, scratches, and wear spots on the metal surfaces. When the oil flows, these peaks and valleys rub together creating friction, causing the engine to run hotter, and resulting in compromised engine performance. Truckers Best provides a convenient and proven solution for this irritating and costly problem using a Metal-Based Lubricant (MBL) additive package that provides superior lubricating protection. The MBL ingredients actually resurface the metal by filling in the nearly invisible scratches, scores, voids, and imperfections. The resulting “super-slick” metal surfaces see dramatic reductions in friction. Thus, Truckers Best conditions both the metal and the oil, providing total engine support unlike other motor lubricants that only treat the oil.
Diesel truck drivers can expect to see improved mileage and performance (a 5% to 6% improvement is typical), as well as a longer engine life due to fewer ”cold starts.” Smoother engine operation, lower engine temperatures and protection against low oil pressure and oil loss are additional benefits from treatment use. Year-round, regular use of Truckers Best is recommended for optimal diesel engine performance, especially for the prevention of dry engine starts.
Diesel truck drivers who use Truckers Best oil treatment regularly also experience better compression and increased horsepower due to the fact that the Truckers Best seals worn rings and reverses engine wear built up over the long life of the engine. Beyond all of these benefits, Truckers Best extends the life of the motor oil by supplementing the oil’s existing additive package, thereby protecting the engine from acids and other impurities that accumulate in the oil after the additive package wears out.
Bell Performance’s Truckers Best is conveniently available in a one bottle, single-dose application. Each 32-oz bottle is formulated to treat one large truck oil change (between 40-44 quarts of oil). It can be purchased through a certified Bell Performance dealer, or online for $43.00. A twelve-pack case is also available for $418.00, a savings of almost 20%.

Epes gives away a brand new pickup truck and two large cash prizes as a part of its 2011 Biggest Referral contest
Greensboro, N.C. – Epes Transport System, a North Carolina-based truckload carrier, recently announced the winners of its 2011 Biggest Referral contest. The company handed out two $5,000 cash prizes and one brand new Chevrolet Silverado truck at the ribbon-cutting ceremony for its new drivers’ lounge in Greensboro, N.C.
“Our drivers have always been willing to share with other drivers the great opportunities available here at Epes – the place they call home,” said Melissa Davis, Epes director of recruiting. “We are thrilled to be able to thank our drivers in such a big way this year for spreading the word about Epes.”
Drivers Eric Betts, Tim Britt and Donald Washburn tied for first place for having the most referrals during the duration of the contest. Their names were drawn during the ceremony to determine which prize each would receive. Britt won the pickup truck and Betts and Washburn each won $5,000.
Epes Transport is known throughout the industry as a company that takes care of its drivers with its community-based driver culture, weekly home time, substantial benefits and safety bonuses. In addition to the newly opened driver’s lounge, Epes Transport also has a spousal support group that send out weekly newsletters and a comprehensive wellness program which includes a free clinic for drivers, personnel and family dependents.
“Even though Epes has seen a lot of growth and success over the years, we are still able to maintain a thriving small-business oriented atmosphere,” said Davis. “In addition to repeating a similar referral contest next year, there are great things in store for Epes in 2012.”
Epes Transport was recently named Walmart General Merchandise Gold Carrier of the Year and one of the top nominees for the Truckload Carriers Association’s (TCA) Best Fleets to Drive For. The company’s drivers haven’t gone unnoticed either. Epes driver Freddy Bell was chosen as a finalist for the TCA Driver of the Year award and TCA also named driver Marcus Beam as the 2011 Highway Angel of the Year for rescuing a mother and her two children from an overturned vehicle while on the job. Beam was awarded a trophy at the Famous Idaho Potato Bowl in Boise, Idaho on December 17, 2011.
